HSS Long Series Drill Bits

HSS long series drill bits are the extra-length drills in the HSS range, made longer than standard jobber bits to reach further and drill deeper. This guide explains when the extra length earns its place.

Why choose a long series bit — The added length lets the bit drill deep holes and reach into recessed or awkward positions a standard bit cannot get to. That reach is the whole point of the long series, so use one where the job genuinely needs it. A longer bit also flexes more, so where the extra length is not needed a standard or stub bit will drill straighter and truer.

Materials — Ground high speed steel handles metal and wood. Use a cutting lubricant on metal, run at a steady speed and let the bit clear its swarf rather than forcing it, which keeps the bit cool and the hole clean over the extra depth.

Choosing a size — Match the diameter to the hole you need, and check the length reaches the depth required. Order the individual sizes you use most, or a set to cover a range.
