Collection: Flap Discs
Zirconium flap discs for angle grinders, 100mm to 180mm, in 40, 60 and 80 grit. Abracs pro line, Type 29 conical, on a lightweight fibreglass backing. Manufactured to O.S.A. safety standards, EN 13743. For stainless steel, mild steel, sheet metal and high grade steel.
Grinding and finishing in one pass
A flap disc is built from overlapping abrasive flaps rather than a solid bonded wheel. The flaps wear away as you work to expose fresh abrasive, so the disc keeps cutting consistently instead of glazing over. The practical difference is that a grinding disc removes material and leaves you to finish afterwards, whereas a flap disc takes the weld down and leaves a blended surface in the same operation.
Why zirconium
Zirconium grain is tougher and longer lasting than aluminium oxide, and it fractures as it wears to keep presenting a sharp edge. That makes it the grain to use on stainless steel and high grade steel, and the more economical choice on any job with real material to move, despite the higher price per disc.
Choosing a grit
40 (coarse) for fast stock removal, knocking down heavy welds and rough edges. 60 (medium) is the general-purpose choice, balancing removal against finish. 80 (fine) for blending, cleaning up and final finishing before paint or polish. Most workshops keep 40 and 60 in stock and reach for 80 when the finish matters.
Choosing a size
Match the disc to your grinder, never the other way round. 100mm (4"), 115mm (4.5") and 125mm (5") suit standard handheld grinders and cover most workshop and site work. 180mm (7") needs a large two-handed grinder and clears material far faster, for fabrication and structural steel. Larger discs run at lower maximum speeds.
Working angle
These are Type 29 conical discs, with the flaps set at an angle rather than flat. Work them at 15° to 25° to the surface — that puts the face of the disc in contact and is what makes them suited to contours, edges and weld blending rather than flat surface finishing.
Checking the bore
The 115mm, 125mm and 180mm discs use a standard 22mm bore. The 100mm disc has a 16mm bore — check what your grinder takes before ordering.
Safety
Never exceed the maximum RPM printed on the disc, and check your grinder's rated speed is at or below it. Use the grinder's guard, and wear eye protection and a dust mask. Let the disc do the work rather than leaning on it, and never use a disc that has been dropped.
