SDS Drill Bits

SDS drill bits are carbide-tipped masonry bits with an SDS shank, made for the hammer action of a rotary hammer drill. This guide covers how to choose the right bit for your drill and the job.

SDS+ or SDS-max — This is the first thing to check, as the shank must match your drill. SDS+ is the common size fitted to most cordless and mains rotary hammers and handles the majority of general and fixing work. SDS-max is the larger, heavy-duty shank used on bigger breakers and drills for large-diameter and deep holes. These bits are SDS+; confirm your drill takes an SDS+ shank before ordering.

What they drill — A tungsten carbide tip lets these bits cut concrete, brick, block and stone, where the hammer action shatters the material and the flutes clear the dust. They are for masonry, not metal or wood, so use the right bit for those materials instead.

Choosing a size and length — Match the bit diameter to the fixing or plug you are using, and allow enough working length to reach full depth. For wall plugs, drill the diameter the plug specifies. Order the sizes you use most or a set to cover common fixings.
