Domestic fuses are the household cartridge fuses fitted in UK plugs and fused connection units, protecting appliances and their leads. This guide explains how to choose the right one.
What they are — These are the plug-top fuses found in the 3-pin plug of a mains appliance and in fused spurs and connection units. The fuse protects the appliance and its flex against overload and faults, so a working fuse of the correct rating is part of using the appliance safely. They are a mains household fuse, different from the automotive fuses used in vehicles.
Choosing the rating — Fit the rating suited to the appliance. Lower-powered appliances such as lamps, clocks and electronics take a lower rating, while high-powered appliances such as heaters, kettles and irons take a 13A fuse. Where the appliance or its rating plate specifies a fuse rating, always fit that rating. Never fit a higher rating to stop a fuse blowing, as the fuse is there to protect the appliance and lead.
Keeping a stock — As fuses are a consumable that blows on a fault, a mixed selection of the common ratings is worth keeping to hand for repairs and replacements.
