Grinding discs are not cutting discs
A grinding disc is 6mm thick and designed to be worked on its face, taking material off the surface. A cutting disc is 1mm to 3mm and designed to be worked on its edge. Using a cutting disc for grinding puts side loading on a disc that has no body to resist it, and it can shatter. If you need to cut rather than grind, see our cutting discs.
What the depressed centre does
The centre is recessed so the grinder's locknut sits below the working face. That lets you hold the grinder at a shallow angle and keep the whole face in contact with the work, rather than the nut riding on the surface and stopping the disc sitting flat.
What they are for
Dressing back welds, removing weld spatter and burrs, chamfering and deburring edges, cleaning up cut ends, and taking off rust, scale or old weld before painting or refinishing.
Choosing a size
Match the disc to your grinder, never the other way round. 100mm (4"), 115mm (4.5") and 125mm (5") suit standard handheld grinders and are the sizes for general workshop and site use. 178mm (7") and 230mm (9") need a large two-handed grinder and clear material far faster, for fabrication and structural steelwork. Larger discs run at lower maximum speeds.
Checking the bore
The 115mm, 125mm, 178mm and 230mm discs use a standard 22mm bore. The 100mm disc has a 16mm (5/8") bore — check what your grinder takes before ordering.
Safety
Never exceed the maximum RPM printed on the disc, and check your grinder's rated speed is at or below it. Always use the grinder's guard, and wear eye protection and a dust mask. Let the disc do the work rather than leaning on it, and never use a grinding disc that has been dropped.
