Collection: Advance / Retard Hose

Advance and retard hose is the small-bore vacuum pipe that connects a distributor's vacuum advance unit to its vacuum source. This guide explains what it is and what it fits.

What it is for — On engines with a mechanical distributor, the vacuum advance (and retard) capsule adjusts ignition timing according to engine load, using vacuum drawn through a thin pipe from the carburettor or inlet manifold. This hose is that pipe. It is a small-bore rubber vacuum line, so it needs to be fuel and oil resistant and stay supple to seal on the small spigots at each end.

Where it is used — It is a classic and older-vehicle part, used when servicing or restoring a distributor's vacuum advance, or replacing a perished original pipe. Supplied on a roll so you can cut the exact length the routing needs.

Fitting — Cut to length, push fully onto the spigots on the distributor capsule and the vacuum take-off, and route it clear of hot and moving parts. A snug fit on the spigots is what keeps the vacuum signal sealed, so replace a hose that has gone hard or split rather than reusing it.
