The flange under the head works as a built in washer, spreading the clamping load so the screw does not pull through thin plastic or sheet and needs nothing behind it. The black finish is the reason to reach for these rather than a bright zinc screw on interior work: against a black dashboard, door card or moulding the head disappears instead of catching the light.
