A strip fuse is a flat metal link in a moulded body, and it sits in a holder or link block on a main feed rather than in the fuse box alongside the circuit fuses. It is the fuse that protects the heavy cable itself, the run from the battery, the alternator output, the supply into a distribution block. So a chafed or shorted main lead cannot put the whole battery through the loom.
