A spring washer is a split ring that flattens as the nut is pulled up, keeping tension in the joint and biting against the nut face so it cannot back off under vibration. In stainless it has one advantage a nyloc nut does not: it takes no notice of heat, which makes it the locking washer for exhausts, manifolds and heat shields where a nylon insert would soften and let go. There is no plating to corrode away and leave the joint slack either.
