A Woodruff key is the half moon shaped key that drops into a curved slot milled in a shaft. It sits in that slot on its own before the pulley goes on, which is what makes it easier to assemble than a straight key, and it stands proud to carry the drive between the shaft and whatever is mounted on it - a pulley, a gear, a flywheel or a sprocket. Sizes are given as width by diameter alongside the key number, so a key can be matched by either.
