A spring washer is a single coil split ring that is squashed flat as the nut is tightened, so it keeps tension in the joint and bites against the nut face rather than letting it back off under vibration. They are the standard washer under a nut or setscrew on engine, chassis, exhaust and bracket bolts, and unlike a nylon insert nut there is nothing in them to mind the heat.
