A Table 4 washer is thicker and wider across than the standard pattern for the same bolt, so it spreads the clamping load over more area and holds its shape rather than dishing as the nut is pulled up. That is what you want under a nut on an engine or chassis bolt, a trailer fixing, or any joint that gets torqued properly rather than nipped up.
